Sailor Man

…B.ENGEL of SØNGERKNABEN WIEN strikes again. He released an acoustic version of TURBONEGROs SAILOR MAN. Some weeks ago he asked me to create a video for this and sure I did, cause I real like to join the project. But, he is much better to explain what this all about, so here is B.ENGEL just for you.

Ahoi! from Hamburg
Miroslav aka Sir Polariot

“Some years ago I realized that there is no song for the TURBOJUGEND. So I thought I needed to record one on my own. That´s why I made TURBOJUGEND SAVED MY LIFE (TJS#1). I wrote the lyrics about the TURBOJUGEND, about HAMBURG and what I feel about us. TURBOJUGEND saved my life – it sure did!

My second cover was a the song ALL I WANT (TJS#2) from THE SPITS. I was in LOS ANGELES and went to a SPITS concert with BIG AL and the lovely boys of TURBOJUGEND LOS ANGELES. The following year I came back to LA with an accoustic guitar cover version of this song that I recorded at my home and I asked BIG AL if he wanted to sing. He changed the lyrics and sang it brilliantly.

The third song was a SUBWAYS cover. I changed the lyrics and called it: DENIM QUEEN (TJS#3). I asked a friend to play the solo guitar for this song and I guess this is the best part of it. This solo fucking rocks!

Then I thought of doing something like the BAND AID song. Not only a song for the Jugend – no – a song with the Jugend! I recorded an accoustic version of SAILOR MAN, brought a small recording device and a microphone to the WELTTURBOJUGENDTAGE 2014 and asked some people who where at  the SCHLEMMERECK, if the want to sing a line of this song. Of course I also had some Turbojugendliche in my head which I wanted to be part of this. And all of them where singing. Some in Tschebestas and my hotel room, some in their hotel rooms at the Reeperbahn. I needed more lyrics so Tschebesta and me wrote a third verse. Back home in VIENNA I started with editing. It was a horror. Especially the chorus. It was impossible to make them all sing together. It sounded horrible. Everyone sang a little bit different, some of beat, some of them simply false. I stopped the project for some months. Than I wrote some mails to Turbojugendliche around the world if the wanted to contribute. And again all where on board! So I recieved mails from Scottland, Sweden, USA, Finland etc. with song parts. And at the point where I couldnt do it alone anymore a gave all the material to my friend who also finished, edited and mastered all my other „songs“. He tamed the chaos. And what remained is pure emotion from each singer. They all tried their best and put all they had in their phrases.

When I had the song finished I needed a video. So again I asked someone of the TURBOJUGEND who I thought would do it awesome – handsome, lovely MIROSLAV MENSCHENKIND aka SIR POLARIOT of TURBOJUGEND ST. PAULI. He made the best possible video for this song. A video about Hamburg, St. Pauli and TJ St. Pauli. It´s more that I ever aspected.

This song is for the TURBOJUGEND. It´s for you – it´s for us! To my mind all of this songs have one thing in common. They are by far not perfect. No perfect singers, no perfect musicians. But it sounds real and there is a lot of emotion. Ahoi – yours truly, B.Engel”
